In the early 1980’s, ATM was asked to quote on the first aluminum transmission valves for the control bodies for the AOD and AXOD transmissions that went into the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable. There was a learning curve to get the grinding and hardcoat anodizing to mesh with the machined blanks. Once that was accomplished, the transmissions were some of the best ever with very low warranty claims. After providing spool valves for several vehicle lines in 1995, we tried Alcoa's 6020-T8/T9 lead free aluminum and were able to give Ford a cost reduction and a lead free part before the push for "Eco-Friendly" materials was demanded by the Government. We also found out that the lead-free material gave us a better finish on the valves because there was no lead to leach out during the hardcoat process! We ended up with a better quality, eco-friendly part, with a reduced cost, and that is today’s transmission spool valve!
